Singles Sparks - CT and NY Matchmaker Insights for Singles - August 30 Edition

Hello LoVers, I realize some of the dating advice I give works especially well in matchmaking because I have the advantage of talking to both people. I know he likes her but doesn't want to come on too strong. I know she likes him but is waiting for him to make the next plan. I can see when two people who actually like each other are overthinking, misreading each other, or about to get in their own way. And when I can coach them both to play by my "rules," something pretty beautiful usually happens: he makes the move, she receives it gracefully, and off they go into early dating and, oftentimes into relationship. But of course, I don't have a phone line attached to every date happening out there (imagine that!) which got me thinking... shouldn't we ALL be playing by pretty much the same rules? Treat people the way you want to be treated. If you like someone, let them feel liked. Assume good intentions before jumping to the worst conclusion. Be clear about what you need instead of expecting someone to guess. Give a little grace. Dating shouldn't feel like two people on opposing teams trying to gain the upper hand or constantly looking for reasons the other person isn't right for them. So cut that out. Would ya? Maybe my "rules" aren't really dating rules at all. They're relationship rules. They're human-being rules. The goal isn't to win the dating game. 1. 1. They Want the Benefits Without the Responsibility: They love the closeness, attention, affection, and companionship—but avoid defining the relationship or taking steps that create real partnership. They want connection without accountability.

2. Their Words and Actions Don't Match: They may say, "I really like you," or "I can see this becoming something,"but their behavior tells a different story. They're inconsistent, cancel often, disappear for stretches, or keep you at arm's length. Commitment is demonstrated through consistency, not promises.

3. They Keep One Foot Out the Door: They constantly talk about needing freedom, being unsure what they want, having a "lot going on," or not wanting to rush anything. Taking things slowly is healthy—but if someone repeatedly avoids moving the relationship forward, that uncertainty is information.
