As I'm writing this tonight, I'm sitting in my backyard watching fireflies dance across the lawn. They're beautiful, aren't they? Magical, even. But if you've ever tried to catch one, you know what happens. You run from one little flash of light to the next, only to watch it disappear and pop up somewhere else.

And it made me think about dating.

We hear a lot about noticing "green flags." And while I think they're important, I worry we've become a little too focused on chasing flashes instead of paying attention to patterns. Green flags get your attention. Green patterns earn your trust.

You know the only way to recognize a pattern? Time. Observation. Shared experiences.

(I know... I may sound like a broken record encouraging you to give good people a real chance. But I just can't stop saying it because I've watched it change so many lives. It's too important.)

One thoughtful text? Green flag.

One great date? Green flag.

One romantic gesture? Also a green flag.

But one green flag doesn't tell you who someone is. Patterns do.

Does their kindness show up consistently? Do their words match their actions? Do they follow through? Are they emotionally available over time? Do you feel more like yourself the more you get to know them?

The healthiest, most JOYful relationships aren't built on exciting moments alone. They're built on repeated moments that quietly say, "You can count on me."

So this summer, enjoy the fireflies... but please don't build your love life around chasing flashes. Stick around to notice the person whose steady light keeps showing up long after everyone else's has disappeared. The brightest flash isn't always the best match.
