HOT TOPIC: Reverse Age-Gap Relationships

For years, heterosexual relationships have followed an all too familiar order. The man in the dynamic was always older, had more money, and sometimes played the role of the protector and provider in a relationship. The woman was often younger and had fewer resources to her name. For this reason, she was often dependent on the man and played the role of the 'accommodating nurturer.' While we're yet to completely throw out this outdated version of the script, an emergent script is slowly but surely creating ripples. Women are choosing partners who are younger than themselves, bringing in the "reverse-age-gap" trend.

TOP 3: Ways to Stop Getting Defensive

1. Pause before defending yourself: When you feel the urge to immediately explain, correct, or prove your point, wait a few seconds. Ask yourself: "What are they actually trying to tell me?"

2. Validate before you explain: You don't have to agree with their interpretation to acknowledge their experience. Try: "I can understand why that hurt you." Then give your perspective. Feeling heard often lowers the temperature dramatically.

3. Replace "but" with curiosity: Instead of "But that's not what happened," ask: "What part of what I did bothered you the most?" Curiosity moves you from defending yourself to understanding the problem, which makes productive disagreement much easier.
